We Buy United States Steel
We stay close to home in all of our purchasing because we know how important it is to support our local economy. Primarily, we are the local manufacturing, in that we use pre-painted coil steel to make trims in our fabrication shop and roofing panels right at the job site. The steel coil we use comes from McElroy Metal, who in turn buys paints and slits master coil from US Steel. US Steel manufactures master coil with product bought from Mittal who buys Iron pellets from Cliffs Natural Resources, the owners of the local Iron mines in our town. Not all of the steel we use can be traced directly back to our mine because of the global nature of the steel industry, but we have chosen the distribution chain that most likely result in local trade, supporting local jobs.
In the fall of 2015 we had Dan Perkins Construction re-roof our house. When Dan Perkins came for the estimate he laid out everything which would be done in a very straight foreword manner. He answered our questions and he didn't try to pressure us into getting the new roof from his company. We decided to go with his company and in the end were very satisfied with their work. The crew which did the job was very professional; they answered in a courteous manner, our questions, and each day before leaving, they cleaned up the work site. This crew never stopped working while at our house, and when the job was finished, they picked up everything, there was nothing left on our lawn; you couldn't tell they had been here. Our roof turned our great. The color matches the house color perfectly. This winter there was no ice on the roof, a problem which we had in the past. We are pleased with the job and would recommend this company."

Jeanne and I often talk about how fortunate we were to select your firm to install metal roofs at our lake home. As I recall when we first spoke, you were rightfully dubious about a single structure several hours away. Yet, when I mentioned 7 buildings needing roofs, you were here the next day! Never mind none of the buildings is at all large!
The installation was done in January and included the “Michigan roof” approach—a lattice work of 2X4s filled in with insulation. Not only does this enhance insulation (R factor), it also lends a “quietness” to a home that is surprising. You and your people arrived with what amounted to a complete machine shop. One of my friends, who is an excellent tradesman in his own right, came out to observe and left mightily impressed.
You described to Jeanne and me the various types and costs of available designs and the various colors, including those colors that are environmentally attractive. We also learned from our own checking that your firm is nationally recognized. As I recall, you had to take a detour to Florida to “fix a mess” while our new roofs were going on.
Two of the highlights of the design you incorporated were the excellent “shelter” created at the driveway entrance (a place to set luggage or groceries and stay dry while opening the door) and enclosing the damp space between the garage and woodshed (a new storage space was created and now we need not worry about moisture between the two buildings causing rot).
As with all lakehouses, anytime something new is done, there are unintended consequences. Each time something has occurred, you recommended an excellent fix. Two examples. First, the roof on the bunkhouse—on two occasions the bathroom vent pipe was “removed” when snow slid down the roof. Your fix, which has worked very well, was to place a grid around the vent pipe to protect it from sliding snow. Secondly, we noticed that snow sliding from the roof does build up at the base of each building. This became a problem for the bunkhouse and garage which have wood siding—the siding was becoming “ black” at the bottom. Your recommendation was to have stone facing installed at the bottom. The gentleman who performed that task did an admirable job and greatly improved the appearance of the bunkhouse and garage. There is also less wood to stain and I no longer have to shovel roofs!
All three living spaces are now insulated. We have no air conditioning, so this has been a big benefit in the summer months. In the winter, we have noticed that instead of setting the bunkhouse space heater on “5”, we can set it on”1” and be quite comfortable! That space is really a cocoon now! In the main house, we have found that using just the wood fireplace and the fan on the furnace, we are tolerably comfortable.
In short, we are extremely pleased with the metal roofs and with the workmanship and attention we have received and continue to receive."

We installed the roof on the US Forest Service Ottawa National Forest Ranger Station in Watersmeet for IMS Contracting when the new facility was built in 2009. WE installed our 24 gauge standing seam roofing in straight Galvalume without paint. All of our metal roofs have a Galvalume substrate over the steel and under the paint system, but this application has the Galvalume substrate only.
Galvalume is an alloy of 55% Aluminum and 45% Zinc. It combines the surface protection of Aluminum with the sacrificial protection of Zinc. Zinc will preempt the oxidation of steel by literally beating the water and oxygen to the chemical bond when steel is scratched and exposed to weather. But Zinc used as a substrate all by itself, Galvanized Steel, has a short lifespan as its sacrificial structure (valance electron in outermost ring) makes it bond with the other elements that weather throws at it and eventually it dissipates leaving the steel exposed. The alloy Galvalume was a breakthrough and now a bare Galvalume Substrate can go 100 years in our conditions without showing rust even with no paint applied.

Dan Perkins installed our metal roof about 8 years ago. We chose his company because of his excellent reputation in the area. He came over and made the estimate and answered all our questions and concerns about installation, up keep and clean up. We were not going to be present while this project was happening but we felt confident they would do the job well for us. The crew that came spent a week tearing off the ancient roof layers and repairing the rotted areas. There was a lot of work to do in that regard! Our roof was installed and continues to look great. Our property was cleaned up to our expectations after the job was finished. Dan has followed up by answering any concerns we have had post installation. He always ends his conversation with instructions to call him any time with further questions. We would recommend him and his installers to anyone who asked."

We love our metal roof. Dan Perkins Construction does a quality, professional job. It is the last roof we will ever have to install. It only took them a couple of days from start to finish."

Dan Perkins is accountable! Dan came back as often as necessary to be sure that every aspect of the job was finished to my and my wife’s satisfaction. He did not limit his attention to the roof. He saw the roof as part of the building and addressed all aspects of the building associated with the roof."

Just a note about the roof you installed for us. The guys removed the old roof on day 1 and completely cleaned up before they went home. The second day they worked hard, cleaned up asked if everything was okay. When the job was complete everything was as you (Dan Perkins, which rhymes with gerkin..LOL) said it would be. We were VERY PLEASED with the work, the crew’s behavior and work ethic. It turned out just as you said it would. Thanks, Dan!"

Our entire experience with Dan and his crew was very positive, from the initial meeting to plan out the new roof to the last seam. Along the way we were impressed by the professionalism and competence of the operation: the crew showed up earlier than scheduled and had the old roof removed and the new roof installed in less than a week, including a brief pause to re-insulate parts of the old roof system. We had been having a moisture problem in the crawl spaces inside the house that turned out to be condensation of high humidity air from inside the house which was completely eliminated by the new roof and better insulation in the sub-roof. This was a problem that had resisted solution for a number of years involving several attempts to alleviate the problem by other professional contractors. I can't tell if we are happier with the new 100 year roof or the resolution of the condensation problem. Pat was very impressed with one other aspect of the job: a the thorough daily clean-up, compete with metal detectors. All-in-all, very professional job by an experienced crew and a result much better than we had ever imagined! Completely satisfied. Now for the camp roof ..."

We were having problems with ice buildup on our roof with subsequent leaking inside our home. After talking to Dan Perkins Construction, we thought they were the best choice for the job. They felt a “cold roof” with metal shingles would solve our problem. We were happy with the quality of the product as well as the workmanship. We have had no further issues with our roof. Dan Perkins and his work crew were very courteous, friendly and professional."
Jim & Elaine Baumgartner, Caspian MI
The new roof makes the house seem warmer in winter, and it solved our 25 year-old falling ice problem. The workers were diligent and hard working."

The installation of my new metal roof on my garage went very well. When roof was installed several years ago, your workers were very professional, efficient and cleaned up after they were done. It's been several years now and the quality workmanship shows. I'm thinking about adding solar panels sometime in the future and installation should be easy since your design takes this into consideration. Thanks again. When I build my new house, I'll certainly consider your metal roof to protect it. "

Dan's crew was outstanding, we are extremely satisfied. I would highly recommend Dan Perkins Construction for any exterior job."
